I was given a guitar for my fourteenth birthday because I wanted to be able to sing and accompany myself… I tried but couldn’t do that and play the bass. I taught myself the chords by using a Cat Stevens Song Book, and was performing in my first stage show six months later. That was 36 years ago. I began writing songs at the age of 16, and still play the very first one in my live shows.
I have had issues with the music business because I am a little hard to peg into one genre of music. My “style” comes from years of listening to every type of music there is. But I gravitate more towards Jazz, Rock, and Blues. I have never been able to answer the question, “What type of music do you play?” So I created my own genre… I call my music “Swooze,” a cross between Swing and Blues.
The name “CoolMuZicMan” came from a fan at the Jazz on the Wharf in Santa Cruz, CA. He had a little too much of a buzz on and wanted to tell me and the band that we played some “cool music, man.” But it came out a bit slurred and the band never let me forget it. I couldn’t think of a better way to honor my fans than to use that line as my tag… so I became “The CoolMuZicMan” and I hope that I can add you to my list of friends and fans. They are one and the same to me. Hope you enjoy The Cool MuZic, Man.
